What Is Manuscript Provenance?

Manuscript provenance is the evidence that connects a finished book file to a specific edition of a work. Learn what a provenance record can verify, what it cannot prove, and how Inkloom Origin keeps the record private.

What manuscript provenance means

Manuscript provenance is the evidence that connects a book file to a particular edition of a work. It answers questions such as which edition was certified, whether a file matches that edition, and how one edition relates to an earlier one.

Provenance is not the same as copyright registration, legal authorship, or ownership. It is a technical record of identity and change. It helps you show what a finished edition was at a particular point in time without making claims the record cannot support.

Why a file by itself is not enough

A filename can be changed. A PDF can be replaced. A manuscript can exist as a DOCX, an EPUB, a print PDF, and several revised exports. Months later, the file in a folder may not tell you which version was intended to be final.

A useful provenance record identifies the content and the edition separately from its filename. It can then compare a later file with the certified record and tell you whether it is an exact match, a match to the canonical content, or only structurally similar.

What Inkloom Origin records

When you choose Certify This Edition, Inkloom asks you to review the edition metadata: title, author display name, edition name and number, ISBN, publisher, notes, certified formats, and privacy setting.

Certify & Export creates an immutable Origin ID, a canonical manuscript representation, fingerprints for chapters, sections, and paragraphs, and a Merkle root. The Origin content nodes store hashes and metadata, not the manuscript text itself. The Origin Record is signed with Ed25519 so later verification can detect alteration or replacement of the record.

Certified EPUB and PDF files

A certified EPUB contains an Inkloom Origin payload in META-INF/inkloom-origin.json. A certified PDF contains a machine-readable Origin trailer. The provenance payload is excluded from its own package preimage to avoid circular hashing, and its signature detects edits to the certified package.

Normal export remains available. You can export drafts and working editions as often as you like without creating a permanent Origin record. Certification is for the edition you genuinely consider finished.

How verification works

To verify a book, enter an Origin ID or upload a certified EPUB or PDF. Inkloom distinguishes three outcomes:

  • Exact final-file match: the uploaded file matches the certified package fingerprint.
  • Canonical content match: the package differs, but the canonical manuscript content matches the certified edition.
  • Structural content correspondence: the files share meaningful structure or content, but the result is not an exact identity claim.

A similarity result is evidence of correspondence. It is never an automatic finding of plagiarism or infringement.

Edition lineage and the Origin Library

The Origin Library keeps every certified edition and its lineage. Earlier certifications are never overwritten. You can download the Origin Record or a professional Provenance Report when you need a readable summary of the edition's identity and verification evidence.

This is useful when a book has a revised edition, a new ISBN, a corrected export, or separate print and ebook packages. Each certification remains its own record while the lineage shows how editions relate to one another.

Privacy and limits

Inkloom Origin is designed to identify a work without putting the manuscript text into the Origin content nodes. You choose whether the public record should remain private. The signing material stays server-side and never enters the browser or embedded record.

External anchor and C2PA providers can be connected behind defined interfaces, but an unconfigured provider is shown as not configured. Inkloom does not pretend that a public immutable timestamp exists when it does not.

Origin is provenance and timestamping evidence. It is not copyright registration, legal advice, or a legal determination of authorship or ownership.

When to certify an edition

Use ordinary export while you are drafting, revising, testing layouts, or sending working files to an editor. Use Inkloom Origin when you have reviewed the finished edition metadata, selected the formats you want to certify, and are ready to preserve that edition as a historical record.

The decision stays with you. Inkloom can help you preserve evidence of what you finished, but it does not decide which version deserves to be called final.
