Character Tracking: Who Knows What, and What They Look Like

For fiction, Inkloom tracks characters, motivations, knowledge states, relationships, world rules, timeline events, reveals, motifs, and point of view. Each character can have up to 8 reference images for visual consistency across generated covers and illustrations. Character rename propagates across the entire project.

The Problem

Why this is hard

Long manuscripts have problems that short documents do not.

The Problem

In a novel, characters accumulate. By chapter 15, you have 20 characters with relationships, secrets, and knowledge. Without tracking, a character reveals something they should not know, forgets something they should, or looks different on the cover than in the text.

Why It Gets Harder

Character knowledge state is the hardest thing to track in fiction. Character A knows X but not Y. Character B knows Y but not X. And when a character appears on a cover or in an illustration, their physical appearance must match what the manuscript describes. If chapter 3 says she has green eyes and the cover shows brown, the reader notices.

How Inkloom Approaches It

Inkloom tracks characters, motivations, knowledge states, relationships, world rules, timeline events, reveals, motifs, and point of view. Each character can have up to 8 reference images (full body from four angles, face from four angles) for visual consistency. AI can generate a character's visual description from the manuscript context, audit it for completeness, and auto-generate all 8 reference images. Character rename propagates across the entire project: chapter prose (as new versions with originals preserved), continuity facts, relationships, timeline events, blueprint fields, outline nodes, briefs, open loops, promises, and the concept.

What You Control

You create and edit character records. You define what they know and do not know. You approve or edit AI-generated descriptions. You run the description audit. You generate reference images or upload your own. Rename propagates everywhere, but every prose change is a new version with the original preserved.
